A one-night stand turns tragic after a married man and an escort ignite their love for each other despite their current relationships and responsibilities. The film was based on the 1935 novel of the same name by John O'Hara. Actress Elizabeth Taylor won her first Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role her performance in the film.

The film grossed over $10 million in box office sales. Along with winning an Academy Award, Taylor also received a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for the 18th annual Golden Globe Awards in 1961.
