Known for her hosting work on such British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and ITV programs as Desi DNA, Around Scotland, and Lorraine, she also worked for BBC Radio London and the BBC Asian (radio) Network.
After studying law at the University of Bristol and before working for the Scottish Television network, she was briefly employed as a print journalist for both the Sunday Mail and the Daily Record.
Between 2005 and 2006, she penned a column for the Scottish newspaper The Sunday Herald.
She grew up in a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, as the daughter of Pakistani immigrants. She later married Piara Powar.
She and Clare Balding, born just six months apart, both had careers as BBC television and radio presenters.
