An American author of historical spy novels, he is particularly known for his Night Soldiers series. Many of his novels are set during the World War II era.
Early in his career, he worked in advertising and wrote magazine articles for publications such as Esquire and The International Herald Tribune.
He received the Helmerich Award from the Tulsa Library Trust in 2011.
He grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side and later received his undergraduate degree from Oberlin College (in Ohio).
While taking classes at Columbia University, he became friends with Margaret Mead.
