About

Canadian-American psychologist who was the David Starr Jordan Professor in Psychology at Stanford University. He is known as the originator of social cognitive theory and the theoretical construct of self-efficacy and is also responsible for the influential 1961 Bobo doll experiment.   

Before Fame

He graduated from the University of British Columbia, winning the Bolocan Award in psychology. He did his graduate work at the then-epicenter of theoretical psychology, the University of Iowa. He earned his Ph.D. from there in clinical psychology in 1952. 

Trivia

He developed an interest in psychology while working in the Yukon after high school to protect the Alaska Highway against sinking. He was exposed there to a subculture of drinking and gambling, which helped broaden his views on life. 

Family Life

He was born in Mundare, Alberta, the youngest child, and only son in a family of six. His father was from Kraków, Poland, and his mother was from Ukraine. He married Virginia Varns in 1952, and they raised two daughters.
