About

Brazillian samba singer who rose to prominence in the late 1970s. She has several well known hits, such as "Não deixe o samba morrer", "Lá vem você", "Gostoso veneno", and "Ilha da maré". She hosted the show Alerta Geral on TV Globo for two years and released an album of the same name.

Before Fame

She began performing at the age of 13, singing at college parties. She moved to Rio De Janeiro when she was 20, where she began working at TV Excelsior.

Trivia

She knows how to play the clarinet and the trumpet. She has 19 gold records, five of which went platinum. Her musical fame has led her to amass over 1.9 million followers on her Instagram page. 

Family Life

She was born in São Luís do Maranhão to a family of nine children. She is the fourth oldest. Her parents, João Carlos and Felipa, introduced her to traditional Brazilian music at a young age.

Associated With

In 1987, she dedicated the song "João de Deus (John of God)" to Pope John Paul II as he visited Brazil.
