About

Writer and illustrator of over 40 children's books and numerous poetic memoirs for young adults who has been honored with such awards as the Prime Minister's Prize for Hebrew Literary Works and the Jacob Buchman Memorial Foundation Prize for Holocaust Literature. She is a Holocaust survivor, and her autobiographical memoirs Girl, Teen, and Woman document her childhood and experiences in World War II in Poland. 

Before Fame

She spent a majority of her youth during the Holocaust in either the Lwów Ghetto or in hiding. She immigrated to Israel with her family in 1949 and later studied art at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. She started to illustrate children's books when she was 30 years old and published her first children's book in 1975.

Trivia

Some of her numerous honors include the Hans Christian Andersen Honor Citation and several Parent's Choice Awards. Her book Girl has received the Sapir Prize for Literature as well as Yad Vashem's Buchman Award. 

Family Life

She is the widow late artist Zygmunt Frankel and the mother of sons Ari and Michael. 

Associated With

After her autobiographical memoir Girl was translated into Polish and Czech, critics favorably compared it to the writings of authors such as Primo Levi and Anne Frank.
