She began writing poems at a young age. At age 14, she started working at a library. She attended the University of New Mexico

By her twenties she had written and published 10 books for Little Golden Books. She also worked for Scholastic for 13 years. 

Family Life

Her father passed away when she was 5. She lived with her grandmother when her mother couldn't take care of her and her sister Janet. She married an English teacher during her first year of college and they had a son named Peter. They divorced shortly after. She later married Marty Scheiner and adopted his three children.
