Known for his villainous roles, he is particularly recognized for his work in a number of Western movies and television series, including Unforgiven (1992); Gunsmoke (1967-69); and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979-81).
In one of his earliest screen appearances, he played Ralph in the hit 1967 film In the Heat of the Night.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he guest-starred in episodes of The Big Valley, Hawaii Five-O, and Bonanza.
The son of Greek immigrants, he spent his early years in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
He shared the screen with Clint Eastwood in the 1973 feature High Plains Drifter.
