Perhaps best remembered for her The Protectors series of romance novels, Barton also published numerous other romantic and suspenseful works of fiction, including The Dying Game; Every Move She Makes; and Don't Cry.
Before beginning her writing career, she studied at the University of North Alabama. Her debut romance novel, Yankee Lover, went into print in 1990.
She passed away unexpectedly at the age of sixty-four.
She spent her childhood years in Alabama and Tennessee. Her marriage to Billy Ray Beaver produced two children.
Like her contemporary and fellow romance novelist Janet Dailey, Barton sold some of her early works to the Harlequin publishing house.
