Best remembered for her roles as Stella O'Brien on the 1970s soap opera Where the Heart Is and as Sophie Steinberg on the comedy series Bridget Loves Bernie, she also appeared in Broadway productions of Bus Stop and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Early in her career, she received a 1953 Outer Critics Circle Award for her role in the Broadway production of The Golden Apple.
She grew up in New Brunswick, New Jersey as the child of Dagmar Kvastad and Rudolf Osterwald. Her more than five decade marriage to Justin Arndt resulted in a son named Christopher.
She appeared with Peter Sellers in the 1964 film The World of Henry Orient.
