Hall of Fame defensive lineman who gained a reputation as one of the fiercest defensive players in the NFL during the late 40's and early 50's. He played his entire career with the Cleveland Browns, making Pro Bowls in each of his eight NFL seasons and winning the NFL Championship in 1950.
He attended Columbus East High School and, later, Ohio State University, where his #99 jersey was eventually retired.
He had a passion for working with children and served as the chairman of the Ohio Youth Commission following his retirement from the NFL.
He was raised by his mother and grandfather following the death of his father. He was married to Odessa Porter, with whom he had sons named Clement, Dan and William, Jr.
He won the 1950 NFL Championship with the help of legendary Brown quarterback Otto Graham.
