Painter who became one of the most famous African artists of his generation. He was featured in "Kin Kiesse," the documentary film from 1982.
He worked as a sign painter at age sixteen. In 1975, he opened his own art studio. He rose to international prominence following his 1989 Paris exhibition "Les Magiciens de la Terre."
His work was housed in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and The Contemporary African Art Collection (CAAC) of Jean Pigozzi.
He was the oldest son of ten children born to a blacksmith father and a farmer mother.
He and Pablo Picasso were both famous painters.
