Known for his prolific career as a soccer midfielder in the English and Scottish Premier Leagues from 1989 through 2004. He played for the storied clubs Chelsea in the English Premier League and Celtic in the Scottish.
He began his professional soccer career with Chelsea FC in 1989. He debuted for the club in April 1991.
He won the FA Cup as a member of Chelsea FC in 1996. He was subsequently named the Scottish Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year in 1998 during his time with Celtic. Following his 2004 retirement, he began working as a commentator for ESPN FC.
He was born and raised in Ayr, Scotland.
He assisted David Beckham on what became Chelsea's winning goal against Manchester United to win the 1996 FA Cup.
