Before fame
He began studying journalism at James Cook University in 1997 before working as a cadet reporter and eventually worked with WIN News. He was elected to Townsville City Council in 2004 and became Deputy Mayor in 2008.

He received a James Cook University Outstanding Early Career Alumni Award in 2010. He was the first LNP candidate to win the seat of Mundingburra in a general election in 2012. He entered Queensland Parliament in 2012 as the Member for Mundingburra, returned in 2017 as the Member for Broadwater, and became Leader of the Opposition in 2020.
Family life
He was born and raised in Ingham, Queensland, Australia. He grew up on his family's sugar cane farm. He has Italian heritage. He married his wife Tegan in the Whitsundays in 2002, and they have two daughters together who were born in 2005 and 2007.
