After rising to fame for her debut picture book, In the Tall, Tall Grass, this author and artist published the work's Caldecott Medal-finalist sequel, In the Small, Small Pond.
She earned a degree in illustration from Michigan's Kendall College of Art and Design.
Her 1998 work, Mama Cat Has Three Kittens, was designated an ALA (American Library Association) Notable Book.
She grew up in Toledo, Ohio. She and her husband, David, later became parents to a daughter named Indigo.
