American actor nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the 1956 film, Bus Stop. He received additional recognition for his roles in The Hoodlum Priest and The Cross and the Switchblade.
He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and made his Broadway debut in 1951.
