British geneticist, writer, and broadcaster known for his work explaining genetics, race, evolution, and eugenics through books, BBC programs, and journalism. He is especially known for books including A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived, How to Argue With a Racist, and Control, and for hosting or co-hosting BBC Radio 4 shows such as Inside Science, The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry, and The Human Subject.
Before fame
He studied evolutionary genetics at University College London and earned a PhD in developmental genetics of the retina at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. His research focused on eye development and congenital blindness, and he was part of a team that identified the first genetic cause of one form of childhood blindness. He began his broadcasting career after working as an editor at the journal Nature before moving into BBC documentaries and radio in 2013.
Trivia
He won the Royal Society David Attenborough Award in 2021 for public engagement with science. He became President of Humanists UK in 2022. He has served as a science adviser on films including Ex Machina and Annihilation.
