Turkish politician who was sworn in as President of Turkey in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018. Widespread protests have broken out against his authoritarianism since 2013. His government has come under criticism for multiple human rights violations and suppression of the press, including banning Wikipedia, Facebook and YouTube.
He graduated from Marmara University in 1981 with a degree in economics and commercial sciences.
He played football for Kasımpaşa before being elected the Mayor of Istanbul in 1994. He was stripped of the title and imprisoned for four months in 1998 after reciting a religious poem.
He married Emine Gülbaran in 1978. They have four children - Ahmet Burak, Necmettin Bilal, Esra and Sümeyye.
