Politician and Democrat who served South Carolina in the Senate from 1966 to 2005. He was also the 106th Governor of South Carolina from 1959 to 1963.
He joined a law practice after gaining a law degree with only 21 months of studying.

He married twice and his second marriage was to Rita Liddy Hollings.
For 36 years, he served in office beside Republican Strom Thurmond.
