Founder of the Mar-O-Bar chocolate candy company, better known as Mars, Inc.
He learned how to make fudge and peanut brittle from his mother and by 19 years of age began selling his first candies to local stores.
His first popular confection, the Milky Way candy bar, was crafted to combine the tastes of milk and chocolate. It was followed up by the introduction of Snickers, which was named after a beloved family horse.
His contemporary and rival Russell Stover created another popular line of chocolate candies.
