He earned his bachelor's degree in geophysics from Stanford University in 1979. He would later begin his career in photography after hitchhiking through Africa for 2 years in his early twenties.
He was named National Geographic's adventurer of the year in 2008. He has had his work featured in The Smithsonian magazine, TIME, and The New Yorker.
He was originally born and raised in Beverly Hills, California.
