She wrote under several male and female pseudonyms early in her career. These pen names include Walter Lehmann, Francis Geyer, Alan Carvosso, and Miriam Stone.
She married William Harwood in 1945 and had a son, John Harwood, who also became an author.
Her literary work was influenced by the ideas of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.
