German philosopher who was remembered for his book The Gnostic Religion from 1958.
He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Marburg in Germany.
He also wrote The Imperative of Responsibility in 1979 and The Phenomenon of Life in 1966.
His family was directly affected by the Holocaust. He lost his mother to the gas chamber at Auschwitz. He died in New Rochelle, New York.
He taught philosophy at the New School for Social Research from 1955 until 1976 where fashion designer Mary McFadden once studied.
