Contemporary artist who is known for his portraits of individuals on highly detailed backdrops. His works have been featured at several museums and are in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, The British Museum, and the Nasher Museum of Art. He shares his works along with the process for his over 40,000 Instagram followers.
Entirely self-taught and inspired by the hip-hop and reggae scene in London, he turned to photography in the 1980s. He first earned international recognition in 2009 when he was shortlisted for Victoria & Albert Museum's Jameel Prize.
He was the winner of the 2011 Sovereign Middle East and Africa Art Prize. His first feature film Karima: A Day in the Life of a Henna Girl premiered at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in May of 2015.
He was born in Larache, Morocco and moved to London at an early age.
