Famous for his Tony-nominated performances as John Jasper in The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Billy Crocker in Anything Goes, he is also notable for his decade-long portrayal of the title role in the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera.
After attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, and briefly pursuing a television acting career, he relocated to New York, where he made his East Coast theatrical debut opposite Linda Ronstadt in a 1984 New York Shakespeare festival staging of La Boheme.
In the mid 1990s, he played the lead role in the acclaimed London West End production of Mack & Mabel. Apart from his theater roles, he contributed voice acting work to several animated films.
Through an early marriage, he fathered sons named Christopher and Brian. In 2013, he married Richard Samson.
In 2015, he began co-starring with Vanessa Hudgens in the Broadway revival of the musical Gigi.
