Elegant, graceful composer whose work combined neoclassical influences with romantic and serial elements. He belonged to the Boston Six or Boston School.
He received a Master's degree from Harvard University, where composer Walter Piston mentored him. He was also taught by Serge Koussevitzky and Nadia Boulanger.
He taught many composers who went on to have prolific careers, including Gustav Ciamaga and Noel Lee.
He was married to his wife Verna until his death.
He was a close associate of Aaron Copland.
