Lawyer and politician who won Dallas' 30th Congressional District race and replaced representative Eddie Bernice Johnson as its U.S. representative in 2023. She previously represented the 100th district in the Texas House of Representatives. She is a lifelong member of the Democratic Party. She is a founding member and vice chair of the Texas Progressive Caucus, and she has served as treasurer of the Texas Caucus on Climate, Energy, and Environment.

Before Fame

She graduated from Rhodes College with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 2003 before going on to attend the University of Houston Law Center, where she earned her Juris Doctor in 2006. She then worked as a civil rights attorney and public defender before establishing her own law firm. 

Trivia

She was titled Freshman of the Year by the Dallas Observer, and she was named on the 2021 The Root 100 List of Most Influential African Americans. She is also the first black female attorney to represent House District 100.

Her father is a teacher and preacher. Her mother has worked for the United States Postal Service.
