New York State Poet Laureate who won the National Book Award for her Door in the Mountain poetry collection. Her other works include The Cradle of Real Life; Home Deep Blue: New and Selected Poems; and The Under Voice.
She graduated from Radcliffe College and later taught at Columbia University and New York University.
Her poetry deals with both the political and the personal and often delves into spiritual and dream-like narratives.
She was married to historian James Chace from 1957–1968; they had two daughters.
James Schuyer was another notable New York poet.
