First Puerto Rican to be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, he competed for the United States in the 1984 Summer Olympics.
He attended Academia Cristo Rey in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
He won gold in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the 1976 U.S. Swimming Nationals.
