Before fame

She began piano lessons when she was 6 years old and violin lessons when she was 8 years old before studying classical violin at Boston University. She had joined The Dambuilders around 1992 and moved to New York in 1994 to work as a session musician.

She named her project after the 1970s television series Police Woman starring Angie Dickinson. She has been a member of Iggy Pop's touring band. She formed her solo project Joan As Police Woman in 2002, released a self-titled EP in 2004, and released her debut album Real Life in 2006.

Family life

Her real name given to her by her parents is Joan Wasser. She was adopted as an infant by a family in Norwalk, Connecticut. She was in a relationship with Jeff Buckley until his death in 1997.
