Son of the famed astronomer William Herschel who made many important astronomic observations. He also did work in photography and studied color blindness.
At Cambridge, his fellow classmate Charles Babbage and him promised each other to leave the world wiser than they found it.
He discovered many of the moons of Saturn and Uranus and investigated ultraviolet rays.
He married Margaret Brodie Stewart in 1829 and they had 12 children together.
He followed in the footsteps of his father, William Herschel, building and expanding on his astronomy works.
