Before fame

He grew up in New England and began experimenting with electronic music at a young age. He received a drum machine when he was around 12 years old which sparked a fascination with rhythm and production. He moved into early digital audio workstations as a teenager and eventually adopted Ableton and then taught himself how to build songs from scratch. He worked as a music producer before incorporating DJing. His first big break was in in 2016 when he released his EP Green Light District. He founded the label and party brand Group Chat in 2019.

Trivia

His stage name comes directly from his initials JST JR which fans pronounce as gesture.

Family life

His real name is James S. Tomaszewski Jr. He was born and raised in Nashua, New Hampshire before relocating to Los Angeles, California.
