He received his formal education at the Royal College of Music in London under John Lambert and at Cambridge University under Alexander Goehr. He studied privately with Tristan Murail.
He was presented with the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Large Scale Composition for his composition "Book of Hours" in 2006.
He was born and raised in London.
He once served as the Fanny P. Mason Professor of Music at Harvard University, the same university that Van Wyck Brooks attended.
