About

Shiba Inu dog whose inquisitive side-eye and neatly crossed paws became the face of the global "Doge" meme and eventually became the logo and mascot of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin. Her original image was also sold in a record setting meme NFT in 2021.

Before Fame

She came from a puppy mill that closed and was put into a shelter. She was adopted in 2008, and her owner kept her shelter name. Her owner first posted the now-iconic photo set to her personal blog in 2010. Her images leapt from Tumblr to Reddit and 4chan and evolved into the "such X, much Y, very Z, wow" meme style that defined a slice of early-2010s internet culture. Her photo was used by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer when they launched Dogecoin on December 6th, 2013.

Trivia

Her image was turned into a bronze statue which was unveiled in Sakura in 2023. Her shelter name was kept because her face looked like the Japanese citrus fruit of the same name. Her story was covered by outlets such as CNN and The New York Times.

Family Life

She lived with her owner Atsuko Sato in Sakura, Chiba, Japan. She also lived with several cats. She passed away peacefully at 18 years old after a period of illness on May 24th, 2024.
