Scottish boxer who became the world's lightweight champion after defeating Ismael Laguna. He went on to become the undisputed world lightweight champion shortly thereafter. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2000.

He was inspired to pursue boxing after watching a film about World Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis.
Trivia
His nickname was Fighting Carpenter. A bronze statue of his likeness was unveiled in Edinburgh in August 2022. He won of 60 matches throughout his professional career.
