Christian VII

About

Remembered as a puppet king under the thumb of his powerful personal doctor, Johann Friedrich Struensee, this Danish regent fell from power as the result of a 1772 coup d'etat.

Before Fame

He was born to Princess Louise of Great Britain and King Frederick V of Denmark. Early in his life, he married his cousin, Princess Caroline Matilda.

Trivia

He was afflicted with mental illness and suffered from paranoid ideation that resulted in self-harm.

Family Life

After Christian VII was removed from power, his half-sibling (Frederick) and his stepmother (Juliane Marie of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel) ruled the country with the help of a Danish politician named Ove Hoegh-Guldberg. His son, Frederick VI, later became involved in governing Denmark.
