Before Fame
She enjoyed multiple family trips to South Africa as a child, which sparked a love of travel and exploring. She attended a South African school for a period of time, which added to strengthening her passion for travel and adventure. She left home at the age of 18 and traveled through the Greek islands, continental Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and Central America. She then worked as an English teacher in Mexico where she taught English and undertook conservation work to protect the jaguars.

She sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in order to get back to England after she was done working as a teacher in Mexico. She is the author of the children's book One Girl and Her Bicycle.

She was born and raised in Winchester, England. She is the youngest of four sisters. She married fellow explorer Ed Stafford in September 2016. She has three children, a boy and twin girls.
