He was first introduced to badminton at 6 years old. Due to his achievements int he under 12 league, he was drafted to the Bukit Jalil Sports School.
Trivia
In January 2022 there was speculation that Lee Zii Jia was going to leave the association after he had shared his unhappiness with the organization. It resulted in him getting banned from the association, which he has since appealed successfully with teammate and fan support.

His parents Lee Chee Hin and Leow Siet Peng, were teachers and international basketball players.
