One of England's most popular cricket captains, he captained England in 25 Tests, and played for Warwickshire from 1956 to 1975.
He played summer matches for Leicestershire County Cricket Club while a student at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford.
He was a crowd favorite for his bespectacled face and disheveled appearance.
His son Neil also captained Warwickshire.
His daughter married the British politician Sebastian Coe.
