He graduated from New York University in 2002 with a Bachelor's degree in journalism.
He won the George Polk Award for his profile of General Stanley McChrystal in Rolling Stone and was awarded the Norman Mailer Prize for Distinguished Journalism posthumously.
His fiancee, Andrea Parhamovich, was killed in Iraq in 2007, and he authored the book I Lost My Love in Baghdad: A Modern War Story about her story. He married Elise Jordan in 2011.
