Ethiopian runner who took home the gold for the 5000 meters competition at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics when he was 22.
He won the bronze medal at the 1999 World Indoor Championships in Maebashi and later won the 5000 meters silver in the 2001 Edmonton World Championships games.
His career would eventually be disrupted by several injuries.
His family encouraged his ambition while he was young, and he began competing by the time he was 17, coming in sixth at the 1996 World Junior Championships in Sydney, winning the 3000 meters steeplechase.
His fellow Ethiopian runner, Haile Gebrselassie, won the 10,000 meters gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
