A Pakistani-Canadian writer, translator, and essayist, he was shortlisted for Asia’s most prestigious literary prize in 2012. His novels include Between Clay and Dust; The Story of a Widow; Rabbit Rap; and Salar Jang's Passion.
He studied at St. Bonaventure’s High School and later attended the NED University of Engineering and Technology in Karachi, Pakistan.
He worked on the Urdu Project, an online resource for the study of Urdu language and literature.
He married Michelle Farooqi and spent his adult years in both Pakistan and Canada.
He and Fawad Khan are both natives of Pakistan.
