Poonam Mahajan

Politician known for her relation to the Bharatiya Janata Party and for being a Member of Parliament from Mumbai North Central. She is recognized for also being the National President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) from December 2016 to September 2020. She is only the second woman in history to become the National President of BJYM.  

Before Fame

She has been an advocate for animal rights and welfare, and for environmental conservation. She first joined the Bhartiya Janta Party after the murder of her father in 2006. She began by encouraging youth voters in south Mumbai during the Lok Sabha elections. She then ran in the 2014 Indian general elections for Mumbai North Central and won by a slim margin after contesting the results. 

Trivia

She is also known for having been President of the Basketball Federation of India and for being the first female to hold the position. She helped bring the Global Citizen Festival charity concert to India, which was headlined by Coldplay and Jay-Z, and was the largest event of its kind held in India with over 80,000 people in attendance. She has been the only woman to hold the position of President of the Basketball Federation of India. 

Family Life

She married Anand Rao Vejandla and together they have a son named Aadya Rao and a daughter named Avika Rao.
