Considered a pioneer of modern Indian sculpture, he was the recipient of the Padma Bushan Award for his contributions to the arts.
He attended Kala Bhavana, an art school at Santiniketan.
His art has been preserved and displayed at locations worldwide, including at the Reserve Bank of India and the National Gallery of Modern Art.
He made his nephew, Dibakar Baij, his legal heir.
A documentary about his life was filmed by the late director Ritwik Ghatak.
