Francis was born in Rocksprings, Wyoming, then moved at an early age with his family to Boise, Idaho where he found his passion for acting and performing.He then started performing at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival before going on to college in Seattle, Washington. In Seattle, he landed his first role in the feature film Game On.

His sister got him into acting. She helped get him get his first role, in a school play, as one of Cinderella's mice.
