He received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University in Virginia and his graduate degree from the University of North Carolina.
He married Emma Jeanne Spears on October 28, 1957. He and Spears had four children together.
He conducted a famous 1979 interview of politician Ted Kennedy.
