Singer nicknamed "The Nightingale of Sri Lanka" and known for her 1938 recording of the popular song "Siri Buddhagaya Vihare." Also an actress, she appeared in numerous stage and screen productions.
She started singing Christmas carols at the age of seven and, at around this time, performed the lead role in a play called The Shoemaker's Wife.
Considered the most significant female Sri Lankan singer of her era, she received the Sarasaviya Lifetime Achievement Award in 1979.
She was married to Eddie Jayamanne.
She and Nanda Malini were both acclaimed Sri Lankan singers of the twentieth century.
