Bandleader and saxophonist who was widely popular during the Big Band era of the 1930s and 1940s. "Swing and sway with Sammy Kaye" was his tag line and emblematic of the Big Band Era.
He attended Ohio University after graduating from high school in 1927. He was introduced to television audiences as the host of "So You Want to Lead a Band?," the short-lived ABC series.
He and Dan Reid composed "Remember Pearl Harbor," following the Dec. 7, 1941, attack by the Japanese. His NBC Radio show was on the air when the news broke of the attack.
He married Ruth Knox Eden on March 2, 1940. The couple divorced in 1956.
He was a prominent Big Band leader like trombone player Tommy Dorsey .
