Composer and violinist known for winning the Pulitzer Prize for his Second String Quartet composition in 1918 and for his well renowned song composition "From the Canebrake" (1918). 

Before Fame

He began playing the violin when he was 7 years old. He attended the New York Institute of Musical Art from 1908 to 1913. He joined the Kneisel Quartet from 1914 to 1915 before performing with the Chicago Symphony in 1915. 

Trivia

He was also a music teacher and taught violin at the Juilliard School, Columbia University, and the University of Wisconsin. He also wrote several textbooks about the violin and violin performance. 

Family Life

He was born in Elizavethgrad, Russia, and moved to the United States when he was an infant. He had two children. He was married to Henrietta Holtzman Gardner. He died on January 23rd, 1984 from old age.
