Kenyan long distance runner who was one of the world's premiere runners, winning the Olympic marathon in 2008 and setting records at the London and Chicago Marathons. His life was cut tragically short in May 2011 after falling from his balcony in Nyahururu, Kenya.
He moved to Japan in 2002 and won the Fukuoka International Cross Country the next year at age sixteen.
His time of 2:05:41 at the Chicago Marathon was the fastest marathon time in United States history.
He was survived by his wife Triza Njeri. His cousin Joseph Riri and younger brother Simon Njoroge are also long-distance runners.
He and Ethiopia's Gezahegne Abera are both winners of the Olympic marathon.
